CONTINUED EDUCATION TRAINING FOR YOGA TEACHERS - 9 TO 12 November 2023

“Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.”

― Mahatma Gandhi ―

WHY CONTINUED EDUCATION?

As we continue to evolve on our path as both Yoga teachers and Yoga practitioners, it is important for us not only to maintain our regular sadhana of practice but also for us to continue to self reflect, to learn and to expand our knowledge and experience.

Continued education gives us the opportunity as yoga teachers to enhance our personal practice, to acquire new skills and deepen our understanding of different aspects of our practice and teaching skills.

Although Yoga has a rich heritage with teachings many thousands of years old, it is also ever evolving as we are able to bring in and integrate new knowledge from Yoga, science and from other important cross disciplines.

It is important to remember that to teach yoga effectively, we must move beyond just a theoretical knowledge of Yoga to the practical application of both our learning and direct experience.

Continuous learning and education also helps us to be in contact with other like minded teachers and practitioners - sharing experiences and knowledge helps us to gain new perspectives that help us to move deeper into both practice and teaching.

ABOUT THIS CONTINUED EDUCATION TRAINING

FUNCTIONAL ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY - APPLICATION TO YOGA PRACTICE
As a basic foundation to any Yoga teaching, an understanding of the anatomy and physiology off our bodies is important if we are to understand and guide our students and ourselves in our Yoga practice in a way that is meaningfu,  effective l and adapted to individual needs to prevent both short and long term injuries.

It is not enough just to understand the structure or basic anatomy of our bodies - we need to better understand HOW our bodies work through an application of FUNCTIONAL ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY in the reality of movement and asana practice.

Following on from our Continued Education Training last year, in this training, we will once again review our understanding of the body to look at how we as teachers can best apply our knowledge of functional anatomy and physiology.  In particular, we will focus on the following;

THE NINE JOINT COMPLEXES
In this training, we will once again focus on the nine main joint complexes  of the body and  how we can apply different states of muscle activation around these complexes to create stability in the practice of asana.

An understanding of how to co-activate muscles around the joints will also enable you to work more effectively and safely to prevent injury for your students and in your own practice.

THERAPEUTIC APPLICATIONS

Applying a deeper understanding of the different joint complexes, we explore a number of basic therapeutic practices for the different areas of the body including:

- Ankles and knees
- Wrists and elbows
- Neck and shoulders
- Hips
- Lower back

DECONSTRUCTING ASANAS - A PATHWAY TO COMPLEX ASANAS
A deeper understanding of functional anatomy and physiology provides us with a much better understanding of what is required for each asana we practice.  Using this knowledge, complex asanas can be  'deconstructed' into more simple component parts.

This allows us to look at how we can best safely and most effectively move towards the practice of this asana through a sequence of more basic and simple targetted asanas, each working on the specific component parts required for any complex pose.
